FIA Formula 3 European Championship

Great preparations ensure a successful start into the season

Who is how competitive? And who was able to make particularly good use of their resources, in the off-season. Who makes it to the very top and who was the best when it came to the preparations? With the FIA Formula 3 European Championship season kick-off contested, the answer to these questions seems to be clear: the partners Volkswagen and Spiess. On the Easter weekend, the long-term partners succeeded in shining at Silverstone, UK. At the British 5.901-kilometre circuit – back in 1950 the venue of the very first Formula One GP in the history of the sport – Lando Norris celebrated the first FIA Formula 3 EC race win of the year. With his Dallara-Volkswagen entered by Teams Carlin, the 16-year old rookie crossed the finish line 1.683 seconds ahead of his team-mate Jake Dennis. In the end, Germany’s Maximilian Günther who finished third had no chance of pressurising the two Britons.

In the second race of the weekend, Joel Eriksson scored maximum points for his race win. The young Swede races for Team Motopark based in Oschersleben and when he took the chequered flag after 19 laps, his lead over Callum Ilott (Prema) and Jake Hughes (HitechGP) even added up to 2.336 seconds. And like Carlin, Team Motopark also relies on the hardware supplied by Volkswagen and the engineering skills of Spiess Motorenbau GmbH.

In the third round of the race meeting held in the support programme of the British WEC round, however, the Volkswagen drivers Eriksson and Norris had to settle for finishing second and third behind Briton Callum Ilott. With three of the 30 scheduled races contested, Joel Eriksson holds the championship lead with 55 points on his tally. “Altogether I’m quite happy with my achievements at Silverstone,” said the Swede. “I scored a lot of points and hold the lead in the championship – a good start into the season.”

The next three rounds in the season of the arguably most competitive young.gun series in the world will be held in a fortnight. From 28th to 30th April the FIA Formula 3 European Championship again will race at a tradition-rich GP circuit – this time in Italy, at Monza.
